Netflix Movie Review: Nani and Sai Pallavi make Shyam Singha Roy a great watch

If social media posts are to be believed then SHYAM SINGHA ROY has been in Netflix Global top 10 list this January (thank you NRIs for that), adding to it being in Netflix top 10 in India since the day it was released. It seems Telugu movies are taking 2022 by storm. Barely was I recovering from Pushpa’s brushing off his beard, that Nani’s brushing off his moustache in Shyam Singha Roy (SSR) caught my imagination.

Nani has always been a very bankable actor without being exceptional (Yes I have seen Jersey, and he is very good in it). But SSR takes him into the exceptional zone! Nani rocks in this movie which basically has two different halves over two different eras. The storyline is tight, music is top notch, the pace is good and the visual delight is extremely high – Note the classical dance sequences and how beautiful they look as a picture. In fact I was left to regret how classical dance forms are rapidly declining in popularity as people rush towards Bollywood, Salsa, Zumba and basically all dance moves that are needed in discotheques and pubs!!

Sai Pallavi is enchanting in her short role (I wish we saw more of her) and the movie shifts up gears from a light breezy 3.5/5 movie in the first half, to an intense 4.5/5 movie in the second half. Amongst all things, Nani’s scenes against ills in the society just warms up the blood. Shyam Singha Roy is a must watch despite its minor flaws – the Bengali diction could have been better, the storyline abruptly jumps at times and the ending could have been less hurried. The nitpicking aside, it’s a great movie and more such artistic stuff crisscrossing states, eras, boundaries and societal norms, must be encouraged!

Thank you for reading my blog. My fictional stories book ‘The Coronasaurus Stories’ (Rated 5/5 on Amazon India by readers) is out in the markets now. The Corona Virus attacked our planet Earth with the same ferocity, predatory, havoc spreading skills and mysterious element that Dinosaurs once did, a few generations ago. ‘The Coronasaurus Stories’ is a collection of fictional short stories inspired by real-life events that took place in the year 2020 when Covid-19 hit us the world. – You can click any of the highlighted words to buy it whether you are living in AmericasIndiasingaporeAustraliaUnited Kingdom or Europe. Click on the image below to know more..
